Mission statement
The Justice and Society Research Centre within the Institute of Criminology focuses on both criminal and associated social justice issues in a broad range of community and institutional settings. The Centre utilises rigorous, creative and participatory research methods to explore questions relating to gender, race, family, youth justice, probation, imprisonment, and victimisation.
Aims of the Centre
The primary aims of the centre are to:
- Bring together research interests relating to gender, race, family, youth justice, probation, community support, imprisonment, and victimisation.
- Link academic and practitioner related interests
- Build external links, both nationally and internationally.
Centre Activities
Research
- Continuing with existing research projects
- Securing funding for new projects
- Supporting PhD students and early career researchers supervised or mentored by academics in the Centre
- Providing SHARE internships to support the development of research skills for undergraduates. These paid research experience internships (provided by the School of the Humanities and Social Sciences) are designed to widen participation in post-graduate studies.
Scholarly activity and academic enquiry
- Organising seminars, reading groups, discussions and other activities to explore contemporary criminal justice issues, theoretical ideas, and a wide range of research methodologies.
Teaching
- Making a significant contribution to undergraduate Tripos Papers, MPhil and MSt programmes as lecturers, course organisers, supervisors and examiners.
Collaboration, Networking and Knowledge Exchange
- Collaboration with academics from within and beyond the United Kingdom
- Work bringing together practitioners and academics (e.g. the Research and Practice in Conversation network in Youth Justice) to develop and debate research
- Knowledge exchange and consultancy with policy makers and practitioners (including membership of advisory groups, organisation of public seminars and conferences, writing for practitioner audiences).
